What you are up against in South Dakota: 61 doors, and fewer every year

Nobody in South Dakota creates a cannabis buyer. Only a card-holding patient may shop at all, and every licensed dispensary wants her, so the sale you take this month is one a rival lost. Here is that fight, and our move on each figure.

Above, four clients’ day zero against the month, in Share of Local Voice: the share of the local pack a store holds for "Dispensary Near Me" across its trade area.

The dispensary count and the fiscal-year comparison are the South Dakota Department of Health, Medical Cannabis Program establishments list dated 27 August 2026; the Sioux Falls cap, fee and lottery are that city's own ordinance; the advertising restrictions are ARSD article 44:90. All were read on 9 September 2026, and population is the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimate. No patient, caregiver or provider total appears here, because the figures on file are search-surfaced and unverified against a departmental publication, and no city-level dispensary count is asserted, because the record carries none.

61 dispensaries, and the list keeps shrinking.

The establishments list dated 27 August 2026 carries 61 licensed dispensary locations, against 79 in state fiscal year 2023. A shorter list is not fewer buyers, only the same patients across fewer counters, and every door that closes hands its regulars to whoever they find first. That is you, or a rival, settled in the three local-pack results her phone shows. Putting your pin into that three, for an agreed keyword set and radius, is what we guarantee.

The biggest city allows five dispensaries, by lottery.

Sioux Falls caps active dispensaries at five, charges $100,000 for a two-year license and allocates the slots by lottery. Where the council fixes the door count, you cannot buy your way to more shelf space; the only growth left is a patient walking into yours instead of one of the others. That switch happens in a search, not on a billboard. Holding that position is the work we sell you: your own keyword set, your own Google Business Profile, your own rank grid, reported point by point every month.

Most channels a retailer buys are shut here.

The state's advertising rules keep you off billboards, radio, television and most print, and allow a sign only on your own premises; a non-conforming ad must come down within 48 hours. So the surfaces you can own are the map, your own site and the patients who verified themselves to you, which makes losing the map dearer here than anywhere. We run all three on one contract: local SEO and the profile, a menu-connected site, and the email, SMS and loyalty that bring her back.

Why a dispensary marketing agency should own the stack

Most dispensaries rent their marketing from four vendors and hope the pieces talk to each other. They rarely do.

South Dakota lists 61 licensed dispensaries against 79 in state fiscal year 2023, and in Sioux Falls the council caps active dispensaries at five and hands the slots out by lottery, so you cannot open your way to more share here — you can only take it off the doors already trading, and paying four separate vendors to fight over it is the expensive way to do that.

You know the rules you sell under better than any agency does, so this page does not restate them. If you want the references, both are in the library: dispensary advertising rules by state and cannabis marketing compliance.

Your stack is rented from four vendors.

A marketplace listing, a menu vendor, a loyalty or SMS tool and a generic retainer, each with its own login. Fix: one platform (SGEN) and one agency, with the site, the menu and the campaigns in one place.

Local SEO is an upsell tier elsewhere.

The work that puts you in the local pack for "Dispensary Near Me" is often gated behind the top plan. Fix: ranking work is included from the first dollar. Localized on-page SEO, 100+ off-page profiles and Google Business Profile management are in both plans.

Menu traffic leaks to marketplaces.

A shopper who finds your store on a third-party listing is that listing’s customer. Fix: menu-connected SGEN sites keep the order on your domain, with staff updating the menu themselves.

Four invoices, four account managers.

Nobody owns the result. Fix: one point of contact, one monthly report showing what ran, what it cost and what it returned.

What is included

Web design and development are included — no separate build fee.

Local SEO, menu-connected websites, email, SMS and loyalty under one contract.

The number we manage to

New Frontier Data (2026-06-21) put one operator’s cost per new customer at about $23. So we manage the channel that costs the least per visit: the local pack.

Our currency is Share of Local Voice (SoLV) for "Dispensary Near Me" — the share of local-pack visibility your store holds for that search across its trade area, reported with its window and case page.

Scoped to your South Dakota dispensary, never to the state

The twelve services above are the same in every market; what changes for your dispensary is the scope, and in South Dakota the scope is a town, never the state. Your keyword set, your radius, your rank grid and the shape of your monthly report are written to the trade area your patients actually come in from, and the top-three guarantee is written to that same scope.

No delivery block appears here, because nothing in this market's record carries a delivery figure to write one from. If you deliver to patients, bring that side of the operation to the demo call and the service-area grid is scoped to it there, rather than to a number nobody publishes.

If you run one dispensary.

One address in a capped town is a different job from one address in an open market: the field beside you is fixed, the same rivals turn up in the pack every month, and no new door is coming to change the arithmetic. So we scope the work to the map your dispensary actually sits on, with its own keyword set, its own Google Business Profile, its own citations, and a rank grid across the radius your patients come from, reporting Share of Local Voice for "Dispensary Near Me" to you point by point. When the field cannot grow, a position you take is a position a rival lost, and the report is built to show you that rather than bury it in a flat sales line. See marketing for the single-location dispensary.

If you run several.

Your Sioux Falls license and your Brookings license answer to two different councils under two different ordinances, and the maps are just as separate: a patient searching in one town never sees your pin in the other. We build to that shape, with one SGEN domain and a store selector, one page and one Google Business Profile per location, one citation set per address, and a roll-up report carrying a row for each, so a location holding its share and one quietly losing it are never averaged into a single line. Your guarantee is written the same way, per location, per keyword set, per radius, never as one number for the group. See marketing for multi-location dispensaries and MSOs.

The guides, read for a South Dakota dispensary in a shrinking field

Your fight is a town fight, not a state one: Sioux Falls allows five active dispensaries and hands the slots out by lottery, Brookings and other towns write their own ordinances, and the pack a patient sees is drawn around her rather than around the state line. These six guides answer what that costs you and what we do about it, each hung on one South Dakota fact, and the offer stays what it is throughout: top three, written to an agreed keyword set and radius, guaranteed. The guide itself is linked if you want the method before the call.

Three slots in a field the council will not widen

In a town that caps dispensaries and fills the slots by lottery, the number of rivals in your pack is set for you and will not change this year. That makes the three local-pack positions the only variable left, and they are won on the things a listing actually rewards: complete hours and attributes, categories that match what a cardholder types, photographs, posts, and questions answered before she asks twice. We do that work on your Google Business Profile every month and report the movement point by point, so you can see which of the fixed field you have passed. See the guide: Google Business Profile for dispensaries.

Order of operations when the door count is falling

South Dakota's dispensary list is shorter than the state counted in fiscal year 2023, and those patients did not stop buying; they went to whoever came up first. Catching them rewards sequence rather than spend: the profile and the citations before the pages, the pages before the content, the content before anything else. Done out of order, a year goes by and your rankings sit where they started, which in a shrinking field is a year of somebody else absorbing the closures. We run that sequence for you in order, and the monthly report shows you what each stage moved. See the guide: the dispensary SEO guide.

When the street is closed, the map is the street

You cannot put your dispensary on a billboard here, on the radio, in most publications, or on a sign anywhere but your own premises, and a non-conforming ad has to come down within two days of notice. Every dollar that would have bought reach in another state has nowhere to go but the surfaces you own outright: your listing, your site, your list. That is not a consolation prize, it is a narrower fight, and a narrower fight is one you can actually win. We hold those surfaces for you and keep the wording inside the rules while we do it. See the guide: dispensary advertising rules by state.

The one list you are allowed to write to

South Dakota lets you email, text or call a patient who has verified herself to you, and shuts the door on the same message sent to anyone who has not. Read as a restriction that is bleak; read as a spec it tells you exactly where the budget belongs, which is building an opted-in list of cardholders at the counter, on your site and through your loyalty program, then writing to it properly. That list is the one audience in this state nobody can outbid you for, and you own it rather than rent it. We build it, segment it and send to it under the same contract. See the guide: the dispensary email marketing playbook.

A fixed pool of patients, and the ones a closed door sends you

Only a card-holder may buy here, so your market is not the population; it is a list of people who renew, and it does not grow because you had a good month. Two things move your share of it: being found the one time she looks elsewhere, and being remembered every other time. A points or tier structure wired into your point of sale, with the email and SMS that keep it warm, is the asset a rival cannot rank away from you, and when the dispensary down the road closes its regulars land with whoever is already in front of them. That retention layer is what separates our two plans. See the guide: the dispensary loyalty program guide.

Four invoices in a market that is losing doors

Rent four things and you pay four bills: the marketplace listing, the menu tool, the texting platform, the agency on retainer. None of them talks to the others, none of them cares that the state's dispensary list got shorter, and the total lands on your account the same every month regardless. In a shrinking field that is the first line worth examining, because it is the one cost you can cut without losing a single patient. The guide prices each rented piece from dated third-party sources; our plans put your site, your ranking work and your reporting on one contract, and the build sits inside it. See the guide: what dispensary marketing costs.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee rankings?

A written top-3 local ranking guarantee — Dispenza’s own offer; the keywords, radius and time window are set in your agreement (see terms). Terms apply. Ask for the guarantee terms on your demo call before you sign anything. The guarantee covers the local keyword set agreed for your trade area, over a defined window.

Which platform are the sites built on?

Built on SGEN — the platform every one of Dispenza’s 500+ dispensary sites runs on. SGEN is Dispenza’s in-house website platform, so the team that hosts your site is the team running your campaigns. Menu-connected sites are built to be updated by staff.

What does it cost?

Pricing is scoped to your locations and both plans above list every module in full, with the site build included and no separate build fee. A quote for your store count takes one demo call. See how pricing works.

South Dakota is medical only and dispensaries are closing. Is it worth spending here?

That depends what you are buying. Growth is not for sale: 924,669 people live here, only a card-holder may buy at all, and the state's dispensary count has fallen rather than risen. Share is for sale, and it is cheaper to take in a shrinking field than in a growing one, because part of the field has stopped competing for it. Every dispensary that closes hands its regulars to whoever they find first, and we report to you, point by point each month, whether that is you.

Sioux Falls allows only five dispensaries. Does marketing still matter when the field is capped?

It matters more. You cannot open a sixth door to grow, and neither can anyone else, so the same rivals face you in the same pack every month and the only thing that moves is which of you a patient taps first. That is decided on your profile, your pages and your citations, not on how many locations you can afford. Our top-three offer is written to an agreed keyword set and radius inside that capped field, the terms are on the table before you sign, and on that agreed set it is guaranteed.

We can barely advertise in South Dakota. What can you actually run for us?

Everything that is not an advertisement in the state's sense. Your Google Business Profile and the local search work that decides which three dispensaries a phone shows; a menu-connected site that answers what a cardholder typed; the email, SMS and loyalty program aimed at patients who verified themselves to you; the signage on your own premises. And when a notice arrives about wording, we change the page and the post the same day, rather than you opening four tickets with four vendors and waiting.

Marijuana was rescheduled federally in April 2026. Has that lifted the South Dakota advertising restrictions?

Not that anyone has published. The restriction is written to apply unless and until marijuana comes off Schedule I, and the DEA moved state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III on 28 April 2026; we found nothing showing South Dakota has amended or reinterpreted its rule since, checked on 9 September 2026. So we plan your program as though the restriction stands, and we will not sell you a media budget that rests on a reading the state has not made. If it does change, the surfaces we build for you are the ones that were already working.

We trade in a town with its own dispensary ordinance, not just the state rules. Does that change what you do for us?

It changes the scope, not the services. Sioux Falls caps its active dispensaries and fills the slots by lottery; Brookings and other towns write their own ordinances, and a patient searching in one town never sees a pin from the next one: the pack is drawn around her, so your real competition is the handful of doors inside your own radius. We draw that grid with you on the demo call, count the field in it, and write the keyword set, the radius and the reporting window into the agreement before any work starts.
