Seventeen open doors, 22 waiting: the size of the Suffolk County fight

Nobody on Long Island is making new cannabis buyers. Each one already has a counter they use, so your marketing settles one thing only: whether the next trip is to yours or to a rival's. Here is the size of that fight, and our move on each figure.

Above, four clients’ day zero against the month, in Share of Local Voice: the share of the local pack a store holds for "Dispensary Near Me" across its trade area.

The seventeen open adult-use dispensaries, the eleven conditional and six full split, the 56 adult-use retail dispensary license records held against Suffolk premises, the 39 active among them and the 22 that are licensed with no door open yet are the New York State Office of Cannabis Management's own current-license data on data.ny.gov, filtered to Suffolk premises with a public opening date recorded, rows last updated 8 September 2026. The Nassau comparison comes from the same Office's dispensary location verification list grouped by ZIP; the Office publishes no county column, so that grouping is a derived aggregate rather than a published county number. The resident count is the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimate. No town, village or hamlet inside the county is named with a store count here, because no sourced place-by-place breakdown exists for Suffolk. No county sales figure is stated, because no regulator publishes one. The advertising rules are 9 NYCRR Parts 128-129 and the opt-out rule is section 131 of the New York Cannabis Law.

17 open shops. Eleven conditional, six full.

Seventeen adult-use dispensaries were open and serving the public across Suffolk County on 8 September 2026, eleven on conditional retail paper and six on full, and they share a county of 1.54 million residents. That is a thin field for a big county, so each of the three pins a shopper sees carries a bigger slice of your week than it would in a crowded city. Putting your shop in that three, for an agreed keyword set and radius, is what we guarantee in writing.

22 licensed, and no door open yet.

The Office holds 56 adult-use retail dispensary license records against Suffolk premises, 39 of them active, and 22 of those are licensed with no door open yet. Each will arrive with a clean profile, a budget and the same three pack positions you want, and none of them inherits your ranking history. This is the cheapest month you will ever get for taking those positions, which is why dispensary SEO and Google Business Profile work come first for you.

The whole of Long Island, in one county.

Not one dispensary on the state's public verification list carries a Nassau ZIP, so Suffolk County holds Long Island's entire licensed adult-use trade and the searches from next door land on the same seventeen counters you are one of. That is demand you do not create, only capture, and it goes to whichever shop the map puts in front of the person searching. Our monthly Share of Local Voice report tells you which of those searches you are taking and which you are handing over.

Why a dispensary marketing agency should own the stack

Most dispensaries rent their marketing from four vendors and hope the pieces talk to each other. They rarely do.

Seventeen open counters hold all of Long Island's adult-use dispensary trade while 22 more licenses sit approved with no door open behind them, so the field you outrank this year is not the field you will be outranking next year, and renting your listing, your menu, your texting and your reporting from four vendors who never speak to each other is the slowest possible way to defend a position that is about to get busier.

You know the rules you sell under better than any agency does, so this page does not restate them. If you want the references, both are in the library: dispensary advertising rules by state and cannabis marketing compliance.

Your stack is rented from four vendors.

A marketplace listing, a menu vendor, a loyalty or SMS tool and a generic retainer, each with its own login. Fix: one platform (SGEN) and one agency, with the site, the menu and the campaigns in one place.

Local SEO is an upsell tier elsewhere.

The work that puts you in the local pack for "Dispensary Near Me" is often gated behind the top plan. Fix: ranking work is included from the first dollar. Localized on-page SEO, 100+ off-page profiles and Google Business Profile management are in both plans.

Menu traffic leaks to marketplaces.

A shopper who finds your store on a third-party listing is that listing’s customer. Fix: menu-connected SGEN sites keep the order on your domain, with staff updating the menu themselves.

Four invoices, four account managers.

Nobody owns the result. Fix: one point of contact, one monthly report showing what ran, what it cost and what it returned.

What is included

Web design and development are included — no separate build fee.

Local SEO, menu-connected websites, email, SMS and loyalty under one contract.

The number we manage to

New Frontier Data (2026-06-21) put one operator’s cost per new customer at about $23. So we manage the channel that costs the least per visit: the local pack.

Our currency is Share of Local Voice (SoLV) for "Dispensary Near Me" — the share of local-pack visibility your store holds for that search across its trade area, reported with its window and case page.

Local search rank grid, before and after: red rank 20 plus pins on the left, green rank 1 pins on the right.

Scoping the program to the map your Suffolk County shop trades on

The twelve services do not change from one market to the next. What changes for you is the scope we write them to: the place the work is aimed at, the grid your rank is measured across, what our monthly report counts, and the keyword set, radius and window your top-three guarantee is written to.

There is no delivery block here because New York's license structure names cultivator, processor, distributor, retail dispensary and microbusiness and no delivery license of its own, so the record kept for Suffolk does not separate a delivery-only shape out and none is invented for it. If you run routes out of a licensed counter here, bring that to the demo call and the service-area grid is scoped to the roads you actually work.

If you run one shop.

Seventeen adult-use dispensaries are open across a county of 1.54 million people and not one of them is a microbusiness, so your competition is other retail counters and there are few enough of them that your name is either on the map for the hamlet your door opens onto or it is not. There is no published place-by-place store list for this county to plan against, so we draw your rank grid around your own door and your own radius rather than a county line no shopper can see, write your keyword set and your Google Business Profile to the place your shop actually sits, and report Share of Local Voice across that grid every month. See marketing for the single-location dispensary.

If you run several.

New York's tax law collects a 4% local cannabis excise for the county and for the town, village or city each dispensary sits in, and section 131 left each of those municipalities to decide separately whether a shop opened there at all. So two of your doors inside one county line can trade in two different competitive fields, and averaging them into a single report hides the one that is slipping. We give you one SGEN domain with a shop selector, a page and a Google Business Profile for each door, a citation set per address and a roll-up report with a row per shop, and your top-three guarantee is written per location, to each door's own keyword set and radius. See marketing for multi-location dispensaries and MSOs.

Six things Suffolk County does to your shop, and the move we make on each

Six things this county does to your shop, what each one costs you at the till, and the move we make on it under a top-three guarantee written to your keyword set, your radius and an agreed window. Each links the guide behind the method, if you want to read it before the call.

No billboard here will ever carry your shop

No billboard in New York may carry a cannabis advertisement at all. Your signage is capped at 55 square feet within 100 yards of your own door and 16 square feet past that, nothing may be readily observed within 500 feet of a school or community facility, and any model you use has to be 25 or older. Read as rules, that is a list of closed doors. Read as a buying spec, it tells you where not to spend before you have spent it, and what is left is the map, your own site and the list you own. We run all three for you, on one contract. See the guide: dispensary advertising rules by state.

Creative built for another state does not survive the yellow box

Every visual placement you buy in New York has to carry your license name and number, a 21-plus and Poison Center line, a rotating state warning and the HOPEline number inside a yellow box, and at least 75.9 percent of the audience it reaches has to be 21 or over, a threshold the state resets each year. Artwork made for anywhere else does not survive that, so it gets rebuilt rather than reused, and a rebuild is cheaper than a placement that gets pulled. We build to the spec, and the spec is why your money works harder on the map, on your own site and on the profile you already own than it does in a bought placement. See the guide: the cannabis marketing compliance guide.

Every town that shut the door can reopen it, and none can shut it now

The window for a town, city or village to ban dispensaries closed no earlier than the end of 2021, and section 131 runs one way: a municipality that opted out may opt back in whenever it likes, while one that stayed open can never shut its doors again. So the count of pins competing for your shopper can only rise from here, and the residents of any place that opted out never stopped buying, they search from home and go where the map sends them. The pin that catches a search like that is your Google Business Profile, worked every month: category set right, hours current, menu linked, every review answered. Both plans carry that work for you. See the guide: Google Business Profile for dispensaries.

The queue behind you is already picked

New York stopped taking general license applications on 18 December 2023 and has not reopened them; as of September 2026 only Processor Type 3 was open. The operators who will open near you are therefore already chosen, sitting in a random-sequence queue, and twenty-two Suffolk licenses are already granted with no door open behind them. Each will arrive with a clean profile, a budget and no ranking history to defend, and your history is the one thing they cannot buy. Taking those three pack positions costs less this month than it will the month after the next door opens, and the order we take them in is profile first, then the pages your shoppers type for, then the citations that match. See the guide: the dispensary SEO guide.

You cannot buy Suffolk share on price, so buy it back on the list

New York closes the lever most shops reach for first: no two-for-one, no giveaway and no below-market pricing, with every visual placement bound to the same warning construct as the last one. So you cannot buy share on price here, and the channel a better-funded rival cannot outbid you for is the list you already own. Reaching a shopper who has already bought from you costs a fraction of winning a new one, and in a county where seventeen counters split the whole of Long Island's adult-use trade, the second visit is where your year is decided. OUTREACH Email is the module we run for it, wired to your menu-connected site so every send lands on a page that takes the order. See the guide: the dispensary email marketing playbook.

A season-shaped market punishes a flat-shaped plan

Suffolk trades on a seasonal demand pattern unlike anywhere else in New York, and a flat, always-on plan is the wrong shape for it. Two things follow for you. The ranking work has to be in place well before your peak, because a pin you start moving in the middle of a rush is a pin you started late; and a shopper who finds you in the busy weeks is only yours if something brings her back in the quiet ones. So we run the ranking to your calendar rather than to an invoice date, and put loyalty, email and SMS behind it, the retention layer that turns a seasonal visit into a name on a list you own. See the guide: the dispensary loyalty program guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you guarantee rankings?

A written top-3 local ranking guarantee — Dispenza’s own offer; the keywords, radius and time window are set in your agreement (see terms). Terms apply. Ask for the guarantee terms on your demo call before you sign anything. The guarantee covers the local keyword set agreed for your trade area, over a defined window.

Which platform are the sites built on?

Built on SGEN — the platform every one of Dispenza’s 500+ dispensary sites runs on. SGEN is Dispenza’s in-house website platform, so the team that hosts your site is the team running your campaigns. Menu-connected sites are built to be updated by staff.

What does it cost?

Pricing is scoped to your locations and both plans above list every module in full, with the site build included and no separate build fee. A quote for your store count takes one demo call. See how pricing works.

Does Dispenza have an office in Suffolk County?

No, and nobody on your account needs to stand in your shop to move a Suffolk pin. Our home office is in Las Vegas and we keep offices in other markets as well, and every client in the country is served by the same team. What moves a pin here is your Google Business Profile, your citations, your site and the report we write you each month. What we need from you is your trade area, your radius and your keyword set, and that is what the demo call is for.

Only seventeen adult-use shops in the whole county. Do I really need SEO?

More than you would in a crowded city, not less. The pack still shows three pins, so with seventeen adult-use counters open a single position is a far bigger share of the county's trade than it would be somewhere with hundreds. And twenty-two more licenses are approved here with no door open yet, so the field you are ranking against today is not the field you will be ranking against next year. We scope the keyword set and the radius with you, write the top-three guarantee to that grid, and start on the profile and the pages.

A lot of my shoppers come from over the Nassau line. Does that change the scope?

It changes where the grid is drawn, not what we do. Not one dispensary on the state's verification list carries a Nassau ZIP, so a search from that side of the line still has to land somewhere, and it lands on whoever the map puts first. We draw the rank grid across the trade area you actually pull from rather than the county boundary, agree the keyword set and radius for it, and write the guarantee terms to that scope.

We only get busy in season. Should the spend follow the season?

The creative can; the ranking cannot. A pin takes time to move and it moves on a schedule that has nothing to do with your busy weeks, so the work goes in ahead of your peak and the payoff arrives during it. Suffolk's demand pattern is unlike anywhere else in the state, which is exactly why a flat retainer sold to you in one shape all year is the wrong instrument. We plan the calendar with you on the demo call and set the window the guarantee is written to alongside it.

The state targets half its licenses for equity applicants. Does that change who I compete with?

Only in who your neighbors turn out to be. The Office targets awarding half of all licenses to social and economic equity applicants, with fees cut by half and priority on review, and the conditional retail program eleven of the seventeen open shops here hold their paper under is the one that seeded the state's first retail cohort. None of that changes what wins a search: the profile, the pages, the citations and the list you own. We treat every one of those neighbors as a competitor for the same three pins, and scope your keyword set, radius and reporting window to the map they are on rather than to the paper they hold.
