Single-location dispensaries · multi-location dispensaries and MSOs · delivery dispensaries.
Nobody in Sonoma County is making new cannabis buyers, so the shopper you want already has a store she likes and winning her means taking her from a rival. Three figures set the terms of that fight, and each carries our move against it.
Above, four clients’ day zero against the month, in Share of Local Voice: the share of the local pack a store holds for "Dispensary Near Me" across its trade area.
Storefront, delivery and non-storefront license counts, the 42-to-37 gap between licenses and distinct premise addresses, the seventh-of-fifty-one ranking and the density figures are from the California Department of Cannabis Control's public license search, data refreshed 9 September 2026, filtered to active licenses at premises inside the county. The nine-dispensary cap, the nine unclaimed delivery slots and the closed storefront applications are the Sonoma County Cannabis Program's own, from its dispensary and retail waitlist pages read 10 September 2026; the county's pages disagree on how those nine storefront slots split between issued permits and pending applications, so only the cap of nine is stated. Population figures are the US Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates; the visitor figures are Sonoma County Tourism's, for 2025, and the winery and appellation counts come from its 2025 destination fact sheet. No California regulator publishes a per-county cannabis sales figure, so none is stated. The county tax rates are the ones the Sonoma County Cannabis Program publishes for fiscal year 2026-27, effective 1 July 2026; the revenue and cost figures are the county's own projections, reported by its Board of Supervisors on 19 April 2024 and 15 April 2025. Santa Rosa's retail tax rates are the ones that city publishes, attributed on its own page to a 2017 council resolution. The 1,000-foot advertising-sign rule is California Business and Professions Code section 26152; the drive-through, walk-up window and delivery-only prohibitions are Santa Rosa's own cannabis ordinance. Premise city in the state register is a mailing city rather than a jurisdiction, so no individual storefront is attributed to a city on the strength of it.
42 licenses. 37 doors. Five stores counted twice.
The state register lists 42 active storefront retailer licenses inside this county line, sitting at just 37 distinct addresses: five stores hold a matched Adult-Use and Medicinal license at one address, so a rival count read off the license list overstates your field by five. Every search still shows three of those doors on the map. Putting your pin in that three, for an agreed keyword set and radius, is what we guarantee in writing.
One storefront license for every 11,557 residents.
That is 2.7 times the statewide rate of one license per 31,320 people, and it puts Sonoma seventh of the fifty-one California counties holding an active storefront retailer license, in a county of 485,375. Crowding, not scarcity, is your problem: your shopper has more choice in reach than almost anywhere in the state, and she narrows it to three before she picks. We work that three — profile, pages, citations, reviews — and rank it as Share of Local Voice across the grid your guarantee is written to.
Nine delivery slots. Nobody has taken one.
Storefront retail in the unincorporated county is full at nine and shut to new applications, while the same county caps delivery-only retail at nine and records none issued; the state register shows exactly one active non-storefront retailer in the whole county. That lane is first-come, and whether you take it or defend against whoever does, a delivery footprint has no map pin, so your searches and your service-area grid decide it. We measure both monthly and put the order start on a site you own.
Most dispensaries rent their marketing from four vendors and hope the pieces talk to each other. They rarely do.
Sonoma County said yes to cannabis — eight of its ten local jurisdictions permit a storefront and the county itself licenses them — but the published caps outside Santa Rosa add up to just 21 doors, so your fight here was never for permission, it was always for proximity, and a store buying its listing from one vendor, its menu from another, its texting from a third and its reporting from a fourth is paying four invoices to lose the single map position that decides the tap.
You know the rules you sell under better than any agency does, so this page does not restate them. If you want the references, both are in the library: dispensary advertising rules by state and cannabis marketing compliance.
Your stack is rented from four vendors.
A marketplace listing, a menu vendor, a loyalty or SMS tool and a generic retainer, each with its own login. Fix: one platform (SGEN) and one agency, with the site, the menu and the campaigns in one place.
Local SEO is an upsell tier elsewhere.
The work that puts you in the local pack for "Dispensary Near Me" is often gated behind the top plan. Fix: ranking work is included from the first dollar. Localized on-page SEO, 100+ off-page profiles and Google Business Profile management are in both plans.
Menu traffic leaks to marketplaces.
A shopper who finds your store on a third-party listing is that listing’s customer. Fix: menu-connected SGEN sites keep the order on your domain, with staff updating the menu themselves.
Four invoices, four account managers.
Nobody owns the result. Fix: one point of contact, one monthly report showing what ran, what it cost and what it returned.
Web design and development are included — no separate build fee.
Local SEO, menu-connected websites, email, SMS and loyalty under one contract.
New Frontier Data (2026-06-21) put one operator’s cost per new customer at about $23. So we manage the channel that costs the least per visit: the local pack.
Our currency is Share of Local Voice (SoLV) for "Dispensary Near Me" — the share of local-pack visibility your store holds for that search across its trade area, reported with its window and case page.
The twelve services do not change from market to market; the scope does, and in Sonoma County three things change it — where your rivals actually sit, which lane your license lets you sell down, and what a monthly report has to measure to be worth reading. Your top-three guarantee is written to that scope: your keyword set, your radius, your window.
One store, and your mailing city is not your market.
The state register files a store under its mailing city, and here that is provably not the jurisdiction it trades in: two of the 37 licensed addresses carry Guerneville and Forestville mailing addresses, and neither of those is an incorporated city at all, while a store carrying a Petaluma mailing address can be standing on county land. Your shopper does not search a mailing city either — she searches where she is standing. So we write your keyword set, your landing page and your Google Business Profile to the place your door opens onto, draw the rank grid around that door rather than around a boundary nobody can see, and report Share of Local Voice across it every month so you can see which streets you hold. See marketing for the single-location dispensary.
Several stores, and each one sits under a different rulebook.
A group here can straddle a city that caps retail at two, a city that caps it at three and an unincorporated county that caps it at nine, and one of your stores may sit where the local rules let you deliver only alongside the counter. So you get one SGEN domain with a store selector, a page and a Google Business Profile per store, a citation set per address and a roll-up report with a row per store, and your top-three guarantee is written per location, to each store's own keyword set and radius, because a Cloverdale pin and a Santa Rosa pin are never competing for the same shopper. See marketing for multi-location dispensaries and MSOs.
Delivery, in the one lane this county left open.
Sonoma is a hard place to run delivery and an unusually open one at the same time: Santa Rosa's own ordinance says a retailer may not sell exclusively by delivery, the county requires a delivery operation to be attached to a brick-and-mortar dispensary, and yet the unincorporated county's nine delivery-only slots are all still unclaimed. Whichever side of that you are on, a delivery footprint has no pin to rank, so we measure your visibility across the service-area grid, zip by zip, with order starts from your menu-connected site beside it, because a gain in one zip must not hide a loss in the next and an order that starts on a marketplace is that marketplace's customer rather than yours. See marketing for cannabis delivery dispensaries.
Six facts about this county, what each one costs you at the till, and the move we make against it under a top-three guarantee written to your keyword set and radius. Each links the guide that goes deeper, if you want the method before the call.
The address on your license is not the market you trade in
Twenty-three of this county's 37 licensed storefront addresses carry a Santa Rosa mailing address, and a mailing city is not a jurisdiction: two of those addresses carry Guerneville and Forestville mailing addresses, and neither of those is an incorporated city at all. Your shopper never sees any of that. She opens a map where she is standing and three pins answer her. So your profile has to be built to the place your door opens onto — primary category, service list, hours, every review answered, worked monthly — because that pin, not your paperwork, is what puts you in her three. See the guide: Google Business Profile for dispensaries.
Seventy thousand people who cannot buy where they live
Rohnert Park and Windsor permit no commercial cannabis of any kind — no storefront, no delivery, no cultivation — and 70,740 residents, 14.6% of this county, live inside those two jurisdictions. The state register holds no license record of any status — active, expired, surrendered or revoked — at a Rohnert Park or Windsor address. Those residents still buy; they just buy somewhere else, and the store they end up in is the one that ranks for the searches they type at home. Almost nobody writes for a place that has no store in it. We do, on your own SGEN domain, and then report the searches you win there. See the guide: the dispensary SEO guide.
The loudest channels here are closed before you can buy them
California keeps your signs off the interstates and away from anything within 1,000 feet of a school, a day care, a playground or a youth center, and Santa Rosa writes that same rule into its own city code — where it attaches to the placement rather than to your store, so a fully compliant retailer can still buy a placement that is not. The same city ordinance bans drive-through and walk-up windows and forbids selling by delivery alone. Close all of that off and what is left is the map: she opens it, types, and taps one of three pins. That is the surface both plans lead with, and the one your guarantee is scoped to. See the guide: the cannabis marketing compliance guide.
In Santa Rosa the medicinal line is the untaxed one
Sonoma is one of the few California markets where the medicinal line is still live in the license data: of the county's 42 storefront licenses, five are medicinal-only, six adult-use-only and thirty-one both, and five stores run a matched pair at one address. Santa Rosa gives that a money reason — the rates the city publishes put adult-use retail at 3% of gross receipts and medicinal retail at 0%. Your best-margin customer is a patient who has already bought from you once, and the email list you own is the only way back to her that no marketplace charges you for. OUTREACH Email is the module we run for it, wired to your site so every send lands on a page that takes the order. See the guide: the dispensary email marketing playbook.
Ten and a half million visitors, and a permit nobody else has
Sonoma County drew 10.5 million visitors in 2025, 45.4% of them staying overnight, and its rewritten ordinance now allows, by use permit, consumption lounges with amplified live music alongside a storefront and cannabis visitor-serving events in the agricultural and resource zones. Over 425 wineries across 19 American Viticultural Areas already sell tours and tastings here — roughly eleven of them for every licensed cannabis address — and they proved the model works. A visitor plans on a phone before she arrives, so the searches worth winning are the ones typed from a hotel room, not the ones your neighbors type. We build those pages, the profile and the map pin that surface them, then report which of those searches you took. See the guide: dispensary marketing ideas.
The whole legal ceiling outside Santa Rosa is twenty-one doors
Add up every published cap in this county — nine in the unincorporated area, three in Petaluma, two each in Sebastopol, Healdsburg, Cloverdale and Cotati, where one of Cotati's two must be a microbusiness, one in the City of Sonoma — and the entire legal ceiling outside Santa Rosa is twenty-one storefronts, with Santa Rosa itself limited only by how far apart two retailers must stand. Four of those seven have already closed their door to new applicants. So growth for you here is not another location, it is share, taken from the stores trading now. Every service we sell points at that: rank, site, email, SMS, loyalty and a monthly report of what you took. See the guide: the dispensary marketing guide.

Do you guarantee rankings?
A written top-3 local ranking guarantee — Dispenza’s own offer; the keywords, radius and time window are set in your agreement (see terms). Terms apply. Ask for the guarantee terms on your demo call before you sign anything. The guarantee covers the local keyword set agreed for your trade area, over a defined window.
Which platform are the sites built on?
Built on SGEN — the platform every one of Dispenza’s 500+ dispensary sites runs on. SGEN is Dispenza’s in-house website platform, so the team that hosts your site is the team running your campaigns. Menu-connected sites are built to be updated by staff.
What does it cost?
Pricing is scoped to your locations and both plans above list every module in full, with the site build included and no separate build fee. A quote for your store count takes one demo call. See how pricing works.
Do you have an office in Sonoma County?
No. Our home office is in Las Vegas and we keep offices in other markets, and every client in the country is served by the same team. What moves a Sonoma County pin is your Google Business Profile, your citations, your site and your monthly report, none of which needs anyone standing behind your counter. What it needs is your address, your radius and your keyword set, which is what we scope with you on the demo call.
Most licensed addresses here have a Santa Rosa mailing address. Am I competing with all of them?
No, because a mailing city is not a market. Twenty-three of this county's licensed storefront addresses carry a Santa Rosa mailing address, and some licensed addresses are not in an incorporated city at all — Guerneville and Forestville are unincorporated county. Your real competitive set is whoever appears in the three map positions a shopper sees where she is standing, which is a much shorter list than the county's. We draw the rank grid around your own door and write the top-three guarantee to that grid, its keyword set and its window.
We hold a delivery license. What does the program measure?
Visibility across your service area rather than rank on a single pin: a grid of points across the zips you serve, reported monthly, with order starts from your menu-connected site beside it. Sonoma is a strange delivery market — Santa Rosa's ordinance forbids selling exclusively by delivery and the county requires a delivery operation to be attached to a store, yet the unincorporated county's nine delivery-only slots have all gone unclaimed. Whichever position you are in, the terms are written to that service-area grid and its window, and we scope both with you on the call.
The county's own cannabis tax projections are falling. Is this market dying?
It is consolidating, which is a different problem and a better one for you. The county has zeroed its tax on cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, nurseries and testing and left retail paying 3% of gross receipts, and its projected cannabis tax revenue fell from $1.4 million to $700,000 against program costs the county puts at $1.7 million. Read that as a field with less to spend on marketing and more of it going on staying open. Nobody is going to create a new buyer here, so the stores holding the top three map positions take a larger slice of a smaller pot, and we measure the slice you take in Share of Local Voice, street by street, every month.
How long does it take to reach the top three?
We give you a window, not a promise. It depends on your profile's history, your radius and who is already inside it, and in a county licensed this densely that last part weighs more than it does in most markets. The window is written into your agreement, the same one your guarantee is scoped by, and we set it against your store on the demo call before anything is signed.
Book straight into the calendar. Bring your store count and your address; you leave the call with a quote scoped to your locations and the guarantee terms to read before you sign.
More markets
Other California markets first, then the rest. Every market page is written to its own store count and its own map, and the guarantee is written to yours.
